Fiji?

The other day during an uninspiring Marketing class, my friend and I started talking about our plans for the long Easter break. Since both of us are foreigners in Australia, as most foreigners do, we like to take the opportunity to travel out of the city to explore the country.

He said: “Oh well, Fiji would be totally awesome. Probably try to get a tan or something.” Sidenote: it’s amazing how fair (like alabaster white) he is considering he’s been in Sydney for the past 8 months and hangs out at the beach with his friends. Fiji. Sounds awesome. Brings up the images of white sandy beaches, clear blue waters, tropical palm trees. But is Fiji warm all year round? And whereabouts is Fiji? Is it near New Zealand (Fiji, Kiwi, rhymes…)? I must admit, I felt silly not knowing the answers to the questions running through my head.

So I asked him: “Oh, it’s summer all year round in Fiji?” – As the logical person in me reasoned if Australia was going into autumn (with 18-20degree weather), wouldn’t the nearby Fiji experience the four seasons as well? And his response was, “Oh yeah, I don’t really know. Good question.”

So I didn’t feel that dumb. Therefore, I’ve decided to dig around to find out more about Fiji. Yes, it does sound like an awesome travel destination, and I would like to say “I’ve been to Fiji”, but surely I’ve got to know where and what it is first!

Fiji Island (though more commonly referred to as 'heaven')

Plus, I’m sure YOU have no idea where Fiji is as well (or at least humour me and pretend this article has been so enlightening).

Centrally situated in the South Pacific, Fiji has 323 islands. It lies midway between Tahiti and Australia, due north of New Zealand. Fiji has a mild average temperature of 25°C, however it can climb to above 30°C in summer (December and January) and sink to 18°C in winter (July and August). The best time to visit is during the so-called ‘Fijian winter’ or ‘dry season’, from May to October. This time of year is more pleasant with lower rainfall and humidity, milder temperatures and less risk of meteorological hazards such as cyclones.

Oh, and the friend is going to Fiji for Easter. Maybe he will get a tan after all.
