Hair and Make-up Gurus of YouTube

You don’t have to be a star baby, to be in THIS show.

All you need is a computer and internet connection. Want to recreate the Dita Von Teese Burlesque look? How about drawing the perfect winged-tip eyeliner? Smoky eyes in under five minutes? No problem.

A wave of ordinary girls turned make-up artists and hairstylists has taken over Youtube, some even garnering celebrity status, simply by posting up beauty how-to videos and tutorials. More than 99,000 subscribers tune in regularly to Michelle Phan’s tutorials. Lauren Luke, aka Panacea81, a single mom, just launched her own cosmetics label (www.bylaurenluke.com). She’s had a whopping 39 million hits on her Youtube channel since 2007.

I have to confess that I have become addicted to these videos, watching one after another for hours and then spending twice the time trying out the techniques on myself (and sometimes a very reluctant sister). I probably learn more on Youtube than in class, and really, I should get a MBA in Youtube.

From professional hairstylists and make-up artists from Ford Models to your regular girl next door, dark skinned girls to Snow White, single eyelids, double eyelids, wonky nose, whatever – there’s a video out there to help you look your most beautiful.

Here at Tattler, we suss out the best for you.

Panacea81 (www.youtube.com/panacea81)

Who: She’s Lauren Luke, a single mom living in a decidedly unglamourous little town outside of Newcastle. With her Rubenesque figure and Geordie brogue, she doesn’t look or sound like your usual sophisticated make-up artist, but boy, the woman sure can paint.

lauren-luke

What: Lauren Luke guides you through quick and easy steps to recreating celebrity looks. Her specialty is eye make-up and no wonder because she has gorgeously deep set eyes that we Asians can only dream of. Her most popular video is the one in which she recreates Leona Lewis’ eye make-up in her Bleeding Love music video. Others include Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears, Taylor Swift, andactresses like Kim Kardashian and all of the stars of “Sex and the City”.

Why you should check her out: She’s so down-to-earth and approachable that after 3 videos, you feel like she’s your BFF. She has a column in the Guardian, she recently launched her own make-up label “By Lauren Luke” and she has a book coming out in October.

Pursebuzz (www.pursebuzz.com or www.youtube/pursebuzz)

Who: Though the looks on Panpursebuzzacea81 are gorgeous and easy to do, some don’t suit Asian eyes and this is where we look to Elessa Vavon, aka Pursebuzz. She’ll bring you big looks on a small purse. She’s 26, of Asian descent, living in California and posts hair and make-up tutorials on Youtube and her own website.

What: Check her out for reviews on hair products, styling tips, make-up tricks (“How to fake abs” anyone?) and even a very current “Gift Ideas for Mother’s Day” video. Especially useful is her “Wet hair to done hair in 5 min” tutorial for the days when I oversleep and need to look presentable fast and get out of the house stat.

Why: 50,000 subscribers, that’s why. That said, it’s easy to see why she has such a huge following, her tutorials are current, easy-to-follow and turn out beautifully. Plus, the fact that she looks to be of mixed ethnicity, makes her styles are accessible to an international audience.

Mzxs83 (www.youtube.com/mzxs83 and http://chiclimited.livejournal.com)

Who: For something a little more local, check out Alessandra/Monica/Hei Soon (Depends if you look her up on Friendster, Myspace or Xanga). This 26-year-old student goes by the moniker mzxs83 on Youtube. She’s had over 200 subscribers since she began posting make-up tutorials 8 months ago.

What: On her LJ site, she embeds her make-up videos and accompanies them with full product listings. She’ll teach you how to slim down your nose, get a smoky-eye look, or steal a celebrity inspired look like Rihanna, Brenda Song or Keira Knightley’s.

Why: Support local talent! She’s got a self-deprecating sense of humour and isn’t afraid to let her imperfections show up on camera. Her Singaporean twang is soothingly familiar and since she’s local, the products she uses are easily found here.
