Making smart choices when it comes to impulsive fashion purchases

Admit it- sometimes, just sometimes, to get away from doing actual work on the computer, you’ll take a break by clicking on your favourite shopping sites. Okay, maybe not so much with the intention to do actual shopping, but some ‘window shopping’, virtual/digital style.

Well, I admit to doing that. Fairly often. Give me some e-luxury, americanapparel, net-a-porter, urbanoutiffters, bergdorfgoodman, asos and then some. So i get distracted from doing work for at least an hour. Time flies by when one is busy clicking ‘add to basket’ on great bargains.

But one day, I saw something. And I had to find out how much it cost. The item I’m talking about? A D&G white tee shirt with the word: SUPERMODEL – (bold, black and boring ) printed across the chest. First and foremost, it didn’t even look good on the ‘model’ modelling the outfit. It looked blah. It looked like a $5 shirt you could buy from some market in Bangkok. Heck, I’ve seen nicer clothes in the markets of Bangkok. Only to find out that the tee shirt cost a whopping USD$125.

Alarms went off. “Seriously? One hundred and twenty five dollars? For D&G? I’ll pass, thanks.”

For a $125, I could buy:

  • A pair of Ray-Ban Clubmaster sunglasses (adding $5 to make $130)
  • A pair of Kenneth Jay Lane earrings (and still have $25 to spare)
  • A pair of gorgeous Hunter tall wellington boots
  • Two pairs of Cheap Monday jeans
  • 2 dresses and 2 pairs of leggings from American Apparel
  • A fabulous one-shoulder jumpsuit and a boyfriend blazer from ASOS

Oh the possibilities. And more classic, chic and wearable pieces at that! So yes, that may be a statement tee. But I think the wearer is making the louder statement of “Look at me! I think I am fabulous and I can drop $125 on this crap flashy designer item.”
