Shakespeare in the Park

A great thing about being in NYC for the summer is the wonderful line-up of arts and cultural events you could take your pick from. Last Friday, I managed to catch this season’s production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night by the Public Theater. Three words: It was awesome. It was by far one of the most enjoyable productions I have seen of any Shakespearean play; partly because well, Twelfth Night is a comedy (its modern equivalent would most probably be a chick flick or rom-com) and also because it was played by a truly stellar cast. There was also the bonus of seeing Anne Hathaway live in the flesh in her part as Viola. (Who knew that she could sing?!) Alas, I’ve no pictures of her or the cast as photography is prohibited.

Public Theater in Central Park

The theater is situated right smack in the middle of Central Park, away from the unending bustle of cars and sirens the streets are constantly resounding with. Despite the intermittent drizzle (brr..12 degC.) the actors plowed bravely on till the rain stopped and my teeth stopped chattering. We hid under our ponchos and watched as they weaved their magic. The set was charming and the music, so prettily composed, tied the whole play together, right up to its chorus line ending. I loved it.

If you happen to be in the city in the summer, please do catch it. Admittance is free but I would gladly shell out for a performance as wonderful as this. See the full programme for the summer here.

P.S. Apologies for the irregular posting this couple of weeks. Our writers (including myself) are traipsing all over the world with limited or no internet access. We’ll bring you more stories soon, promise!
